The Homemade Bisquick Mix That Actually Replaces Bisquick

Here’s a fun fact about the little blue Bisquick box: it’s flour, fat, baking powder, and salt. That’s it. That’s the secret. You’ve been paying $5–$6 for four ingredients you already keep in your pantry, portioned out for you in a cardboard box with a smiling picture of pancakes on the front.

So let’s just… not do that anymore.

This is an all-purpose baking mix you make once, keep on the shelf, and pull out anytime a recipe calls for Bisquick — pancakes, biscuits, dumplings, cobbler, coffee cake, all of it. Same ratio, same convenience, none of the markup.

Why Bother Making Your Own

Because “1 cup Bisquick” is one of the most common ingredients in a certain kind of quick, comforting, feed-the-whole-family recipe — and there’s no reason it has to come from a box.

  • It’s cheaper. You’re already buying flour and baking powder in bulk. This just means you’re not paying extra for someone else to combine them for you.
  • It’s shelf-stable and pantry-ready. Mix it once, and it’s sitting there waiting the next time you need pancakes at 7am or biscuits at 6pm.
  • It’s flexible.
  • You control the fat. Shortening, butter, or shelf-stable butter powder — your call, your texture, your shelf life.

One bowl. One jar. A whole rotation of recipes on standby.

Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 Cup Butter Powder

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the shortening or butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months, or in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
  • To use as a Bisquick substitute: Use 1 cup of mix in place of 1 cup of Bisquick in any recipe.
  • A Few Notes Before You Start

    Choosing your fat:
Shortening — flakiest texture, keeps at room temp for about 3 months.
Butter — best flavor, but refrigerate it, and use within 3 months.
Butter powder — shelf-stable, keeps in the pantry up to 6 months, may need an extra tablespoon or two of liquid when you use it.
